During this time of social distancing, I've been thinking about the human impulse towards being a part of an affinity group, a shared register of "we", and how much I have gradually solidified my identity as a judoka since taking up judo again as an adult. I derive a lot of meaning and value from identifying as a judoka. The interdependence and sense of "we" in judo are so deeply intertwined for me that sustaining judo practice without the tori-uke partnership, the instructor, or the dojo as a whole, has become a bigger challenge than anticipated.
